Succesvol vervolg op Parikrma project door Rabo, Ordina en Cognizant!
In februari zijn er Tesja en Lidwien naar Parikrma in India, Bangalore geweest om de IT behoeften in kaart te brengen. Het idee was oorspronkelijk dat de scholen betere ondersteuning nodig hadden in het gebruik van de aanwezige XO's en dat er extra XO's nodig waren voor de andere scholen van Parikrma. Uit de inventarisatie bleek echter dat de grootste behoefte lag op een child tracking systeem. Een systeem dat niet alleen de leerprestaties van het kind in kaart brengt van 4 t/m 18 jaar, maar ook bijhoudt hoe het staat met de voeding, gezondheid en gezinssituatie van het kind. Het sluit aan op de circle of life filosofie van Parikrma die naar al deze vier aspecten kijkt.
In overleg met Ordina, Cognizant en Rabobank is het project geadopteerd en besloten om het child tracking system te gaan realiseren!! Een geweldige prestatie en iets waar we heel trots op zijn. Om de wensen goed in kaart te brengen zijn vervolgens Reinier (Rabobank) en Tesja (Ordina) in juni naar Bangalore gegaan waar ze samen met locale Cognizant medewerkers de scholen opnieuw hebben bezocht en alle belanghebbenden hebben geinterviewd. De verwachting is dat in oktober de eerste versie van de applicatie wordt opgeleverd.
In Nepal hebben we heel lang gepuzzled of we een oplossing konden vinden voor het dorpje Serachour. Via Nepal Wireless hadden we uitgezocht hoe we een internet verbinding daar konden krijgen. Verder hadden we uitgebreid onderzocht hoe we een relatief klein aantal XO's konden bestellen en geleverd krijgen. Wellicht weet je nog onze Rusland ervaringen, maar dat is op zijn zachtst gezegd een bezoeking. Ook nog een subsidie-aanvraag bij Hivos ingediend die helaas werd afgewezen. Het grootste bottleneck zit hem echter in de beheer- en onderhoudskosten. Daar zijn geen geld en middelen voor en er is geen duidelijk lokaal commitment om dat alsnog voor mekaar te krijgen. Vandaar dat we na heel veel vijven en zessen hebben besloten om niet het geld daar te besteden. Het voldoet niet aan de voorwaarden tot een duurzaam project. We zijn ons nu aan het beraden hoe we daar in Nepal verder willen gaan.

Driving around the world
On November 27. 2008 Gertie Clabbers and Harrie Vollaard arrived back safely from their travel for a good cause of 6 months. On May 24. they started their journey with their old timer Volkswagen campervan. They drove to the other site of the world, all the way to Vladivostok; 17.000 km in total. It was a trip with a mission: 'Primary education for every child'. On the way they visited and supported several schools in Russia, Mongolia, Nepal and India with the XO of One Laptop Per Child. Back in The Netherlands they will continue their activities for the different visited schools.
Oldtimer bus
The travel with the old-timer bus The Iron Lady started in Nijmegen, heading east to the remote areas in Russia and Mongolia. During our journey we had to change our route, because of the Chinese authorities. It was not allowed to drive through China. We decided to go back to Russia and to continue our travel through the taiga of Siberia to Vladivostok. With our backpack we did the last part of our trip. We flew from Vladivostok to Nepal and ended in India.
Our daily life
In daily life Harrie is innovation manager at the Rabobank. He knows everything about the newest IT-developments. At his job he heard about "One Laptop Per Child" for the first time. This non-profit organization developed a special laptop for children aged 6-12 years. It's a child friendly, sand-, water- and shockproof green laptop. It can be used in every remote corner of the world. With this laptop children can learn while having fun, collaborate together and explore the world at the same time. The influence on education is the subject where Gertie will be looking at. In daily life she works as an occupational therapist at De Gelderse Roos.
One Laptop Per Child
In the year 2000, 189 world leaders signed the 8 millennium goals. One of these goals represents the fact that every child in the world has the opportunity to receive primary education in the year 2015. One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is a realistic implementation of this goal. The organization EEN (www.een.nl or www.one.org) is the organization within the Netherlands which makes an effort to realize these goals and provokes the world leaders to act. They also support our contribution. Along the way we visit three existing OLPC school projects in Mongolia, Nepal and India. In Pskov, a Russian twinning town with our city Nijmegen, we want to initiate an OLPC project. In Nizhny Novgorod we start a project at a school for visual impaired children. Our contribution focuses on generating publicity for One Laptop Per Child. We also help at the local projects, give consultancy and generate funds to ensure the future of the local OLPC projects.
